Mr. Kessler was born in New York City.
He began his study of painting at an early age with his father, who was an amateur artist.
He then furthered his formal education at Maryville College, and at The Art Students League of New
York.
Currently he works out of his studio in Connecticut.
He has exhibited in New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, California and Hawaii.
His paintings and drawings are included in permanent collections throughout the United States.
He finds that New England's varying light provides a balanced perspective.
In particular the short days of winter invite an incursion into an inner realm of thought far
removed
from his earlier years in the tropics.
Working primarily with oil on linen, he divides his efforts between romantic portrayals of the New
England landscape, magical realism, and nudes.
His remaining time is spent exploring a personal vision expressed through the postmodern idiom.
The postmodernist works draw upon an internal imaginary landscape as their point of departure.
In their journey they seek to touch upon universal archetypes, while challenging reality on route to
their final destinations.
It is humbling experience to participate in an artistic tradition dating back more than fifteen
thousand
years.
Throughout history Artists have explored, and recorded the natural, and supernatural world.
This rich visual tradition encompasses some of the man’s greatest achievements, and will continue
unbroken far into the future.
Each morning I awake knowing that I am privileged to be able to devote my day to the pursuit of art.
To capture a moment or emotion on canvas is a profound experience of magical discovery.
By persevering through many trials one slowly masters the skills necessary to seduce the visual
senses,
and develop a timeless artistic vision.
Most paintings are worked on in the studio over a long period of time.
I love the studied progression of creating a painting in the studio starting with raw ideas, and
slowly
watching the paintings emerge, when successful mundane subjects become sublime, the ordinary
extraordinary.
A truly successful painting enchants the visual senses.
My paintings appropriate universal archetypes to evoke a sensual response that resonates within our
contemporary aesthetic.
